What On Earth Is An Earwig?

BOOK YOUR SERVICE TODAY

Most people have seen an earwig before, but they don’t usually realize it when they see them. An earwig is that little black bug you sometimes see walking through your carpet with the little baby stingers on its behind, about the size of your fingernail. Here’s what you need to know about earwigs.

Where do they usually live?

Earwigs prefer to be in cool, damp areas with food available. A well-kept garden is likely where an earwig wants to be, so look out for them if you have one. They can and will damage your plants. They also like soil and probably want to feast on your plants or smaller bugs they can find.

What are they attracted to?

Earwigs are omnivores, normally looking for decaying vegetation to eat. They also eat small arthropods and prefer to hang out under rocks and logs – where it’s dark. They are also attracted to lights at nighttime, so they can be annoying on patios or decks.

Why are they in my home?

Earwigs can enter your home through doors and windows, but they usually come in through your foundation. They will usually show up due to a change in weather and prefer to be in cool, damp areas. They could also be on the hunt for food!

Do they actually crawl into your ears?

There is a myth out there that earwigs can crawl into your ears and eat at your brain. Earwigs are actually harmless to humans, and they can’t hurt you at all unless you handle them – and only the males can pinch you.
