Heat treatment involves the use of specially designed equipment to elevate the temperature of an apartment unit or home. Once temperatures of at least 122°F are attained and held for a specified amount of time, adult beg bugs and their eggs are killed.
Heat Treatment vs Fumigation
Like fumigation, bed bug heat treatments only require one application and the applied heat is able to penetrate deep into areas where bed bugs like to hide, such as, mattresses, furniture, and clothing. Chemical treatments require multiple applications for effective control, do not penetrate into mattresses, furniture, etc. Chemical treatments rely on bed bugs coming in direct contact with sprayed areas to be effective.
Compared to fumigation, heat treatment only requires residents to be out of the treatment area for 6-8 hours, whereas homes being treated by fumigation must remain unoccupied for at least 2 nights. For chemical treatments, the space must be vacated for at least 4 hours.
When combined with chemical treatments, heat treatments kill bedbugs and their eggs and the chemical barrier prevents displaced bed bugs—and bed bugs from adjoining units—from migrating back into and reinfesting the treated space.
